Degrees Conferred by Connecticut Institutions of Higher Education, 1983-1984. Research Report R-1-85.
Connecticut State Board of Higher Education, Hartford.
Information on the 27,063 degrees conferred in Connecticut colleges and universities in 1983-1984 is presented, with attention to discipline and level of the degree and the recipients' gender and minority status. Trends include the following: the total number of degrees conferred showed little change from the previous year in either the public or private sectors; bachelor's degrees comprised 49.9 percent of all awards, followed by associate degrees (22.2 percent), master's degrees (21.6 percent), first-professional awards (3.2 percent), doctoral degrees (1.9 percent), and certificates below the associates (1.1 percent); both sectors awarded a similar number of degrees at the bachelor's level, while most associates degrees were awarded by the public sector; the number of degrees conferred by the public four-year institutions began to drop while there were a stable number of awards by the private four-year institutions; fields in which the number of degrees increased over the previous year were business and management, engineering, and mathematics; women received over half of all awards at the master's level and below, and one-third of all degrees at the doctoral and first-professional levels; and minority students received 6.3 percent of all awards in 1982-1983.
