Body Partitioning in ASL Metaphorical Blends
Wulf, Alyssa; Dudis, Paul
Sign Language Studies, v5 n3 p317-332 Spr 2005
Grounded blends may be literal or metaphorical, the latter allowing for an even richer variety of blend characteristics. This contribution of metaphor is achieved largely through the utilization of body partitioning. Body partitioning may result in: (1) the appearance of a single, coherent source-domain scene iconically represented; (2) a single source-domain scene that employs partitioning to represent subblends with different scales or perspectives on the same human articulator; or (3) a scene combining elements of both literal and metaphorical origin. These various possible outputs may be realized by employing partitionable zones of the signer?s face and body. This document contains illustrations of body partitioning in ASL grounded blends.
