Developing a Game Plan for Good Sportsmanship

Research indicates that competition can be an important context whereby youth gain positive outcomes such as intrinsic motivation and engagement in the environment. However, other studies indicate that sports activities may also relate to negative outcomes such as aggression and cheating. One of the challenges for educators and youth development professionals is to help create competitive environments where positive outcomes are strengthened and negative behaviors are lessened. Just as a coach has a plan for each game and for the season, there is a need to develop a plan for learning good character and sportsmanship through all extracurricular activities. By developing such a plan, Americans can be better assured that competition can be an experience that more fully contributes to positive youth development. This article focuses on one example of such a program, "Great Fans. Great Sports." "Great Fans. Great Sports." is a program designed to develop six pillars of character: (1) trustworthiness; (2) respect; (3) responsibility; (4) fairness; (5) caring; and (6) citizenship, in all areas of competition. The "Great Sports" portion of the title refers not just to sports but to sportsmanship in the broadest sense. A university extension and its partners launched the program to provide training, promotional efforts, and recognition to make good sportsmanship the norm rather than the exception in connection with competition in sports and other arenas.
