deBettencourt, Laurie U.; Howard, Lori
Exceptionality, v12 n4 p225-238 Dec 2004
Although many areas in education are experiencing teacher shortages, shortages of teachers who are qualified in the area of special education are of critical concern. This article describes a federally funded training program to alternatively license special education teachers. Fifty-nine career changers participated. They taught special education in 2 southeastern school districts and were surveyed 3 times during their 1st year of teaching. Their reflections on the training program, their school district mentors, and their teaching experiences are discussed. As all alternative licensure training programs are not the same, this article begins to document several components of 1 program.
