Black Issues in Higher Education, v21 n23 p36 Dec 2004
Comedian, actor and philanthropist Bill Cosby made headlines earlier this year, and not for a starring role in a new TV show or because of a multimillion-dollar gift to a college or university, but for his comments surrounding low-income African Americans at an event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision, hosted by Howard University, the NAACP and the NAACP Legal and Educational Defense Fund. This article provides a few of the op-ed pieces "Black Issues in Higher Education" received from readers weighing in on Cosby's remarks. The following are included: (1) "Bill Cosby and Minority Education: The Truth of the Matter" (Laverne Lewis Gaskins); (2) "Lectures from the Richest among Us" (Gerald E. Matthews); and (3) "Bill Cosby's Brown Blues" (Pansye S. Atkinson).
