African American Male Students' Perceptions of Success in Community College: A Qualitative Case Study
Breanna Denise Allen
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
This qualitative case study focused on the perceptions of challenges and experiences of African American males who attended community college and participated in mentoring programs. Involvement in a mentoring program can help African American males develop a greater sense of racial identity and increase commitment to achieving the academic goals needed for community college retention and degree completion. The problem the study examined was African American male community college students often experience challenges that can impact their ability to be retained and complete a college degree. The purpose of the study was to explore the challenges and experiences of African American males who attend community colleges and who participate in mentoring programs. The qualitative case study format was chosen for this research to capture the lived experiences, elevate the voices of African American males, and add additional research on African American males, specifically those who attend community colleges. To conduct this study, the researcher interviewed African American males to gain insights into the challenges attending community college, experiences with mentoring programs, and resources needed to be successful at a community college regarding retention and degree completion. The study themes indicated the benefits of mentoring programs and having a mentor, including the accountability and structure established to succeed in a class and beyond. Recommendations include a clear structure in a mentoring program, encouraging African American males to share their lived experiences, and mentoring designed as a systems approach. Future studies should examine the insights of African American males who are impacted by retention and degree completion. In addition, research on mentoring programs for African American males, specifically attending community colleges, warrants further consideration.
