Pursuing Rigor at the Middle Level
Lifvendahl, Scott
Principal Leadership, v8 n1 p30-33 Sep 2007
In this article, the author discusses AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a program that enrolls the students who are most frequently marginalized in rigorous classes to prepare them for postsecondary education. The best predictor of success or failure in postsecondary education is the intensity and quality of secondary school curriculum. This understanding is the cornerstone of AVID. Staff members use GPA, race, ethnicity, and family history to identify students who would benefit from the program. These students must be highly motivated and committed to completing extra homework and taking more-demanding classes. The students are then enrolled in upper-level courses, including AP classes, that challenge them with a more rigorous curriculum. They also participate in a weekly class that helps them develop the study skills they need to meet the demands of their schedule. The success of AVID in the last two decades has fostered tremendous growth in the number of programs in U.S. school districts. As districts implement AVID programs in their middle level and high schools, however, many difficulties arise. It is important for district leaders to be aware of the logistical problems that develop during the implementation process, but these struggles do not mean that schools should be discouraged. The AVID program serves students who are most frequently marginalized--a benefit that outweighs any detriment.
