Experience gained for teaching elementary chemistry to adults led to the following working conclusions necessary if such courses are to succeed: a need for student self-admission of ignorance, diagnostic testing and frequent retesting, a willingness by student and instructor to compromise and to digress, the inclusion of ad hoc demonstrations and a willingness to re-evaluate the quantity of material to be covered.''
