STAR: An Adult Education Teacher's Journey with Evidence-Based Reading Instruction
Robertson, Lisa
Adult Basic Education and Literacy Journal, v1 n3 p157-160 Fall 2007
In this article, the author shares her journey with evidence-based reading instruction. Her experience with evidence-based reading instruction (as the adult basic education coordinator at Windham Adult Education in Windham, Maine) has been a journey of change both professionally and programmatically, and the students at Windham Adult Education are reaping the benefits. Her journey began when she participated in a pilot project of the STudent Achievement in Reading (STAR) program. The STAR program was developed through the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE). STAR includes a toolkit and a training package. Both focus on the use of evidence-based instruction to improve the reading skills of intermediate level adult basic education students. STAR offers a three-tiered intervention that addresses: (1) How teachers teach reading; (2) How local programs implement structures and use resources to support evidence-based reading instruction; and (3) How states help sustain those local changes. STAR identifies four major components of adult reading instruction: (1) alphabetics; (2) vocabulary; (3) fluency; and (4) comprehension. It also includes effective teaching practices for each component. (Contains 2 figures and 5 resources.)
