The Spirit of Generosity: Service Learning in a Pre-Service Teacher Education Program
Feinstein, Sheryl G.
Online Submission
The purpose of this research was to quantitatively and qualitatively examine the impact of service-learning on secondary pre-service teachers involved in an Adolescent Development course. Eighty-three students in an undergraduate education program were involved in the study over a two-year period. College students were required to spend eight hours during the semester in an after-school program interacting, supervising and initiating activities with middle school students. The study found that (72%) of the pre-service teachers believed the service-learning experience gave them a better understanding of adolescents, 81% believed that it made the theory based college course more applicable to teaching, and 73% thought it enhanced them as future teachers working with adolescents. In essence, service-learning built a spirit of generosity in pre-service teachers and better prepared them to teach adolescents. (Contains 1 table.)
