Understanding Student Motivation: A Key to Retention in Higher Education
Elissa S. Salazar
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, St. Edward's University
Educational administrators have experienced ongoing challenges in student retention. This study examines motivational themes and retention practices in college students that may be a fundamental characteristic of student retention--and discusses how educational administrators measured academic retention by using a basic qualitative approach to interpret how educational administrators understand retention through first-hand experience. Data was collected and examined to understand the effectiveness of retention strategies, in addition to student and faculty relationships. This study further explains the challenges affecting retention and retention method expansions that will require further research. Furthermore, this research was intended to gain a better understanding on the importance of retention and how it affects the overall function of the institution.
