Knowledge, Attitude, and Behaviors of University Professors toward Students with Concussion
Howard, Desiree
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, California Lutheran University
Despite the prevalence of concussions in a college student population, there are often little to no recommendations for returning to school. Academic accommodations would likely be necessary in order to follow the guidelines for cognitive rest, an increasingly common recommendation during recovery. However, obtaining these accommodations may be dependent upon professors' willingness to comply with the requests. Furthermore, knowledge about the effects of concussion and attitudes toward individuals with concussions may influence the willingness to provide accommodations. This study sought to determine university professors' knowledge, attitudes, and willingness to provide accommodations for students with concussion. Sixty-eight university faculty members completed a survey exploring these ideas. Results indicated participants held lower rates of misconceptions regarding concussion as the public on half the items. Participants additionally endorsed positive attitudes towards individuals with concussion and were willing to provide accommodations if there was documentation of the injury. Amount of misconceptions endorsed and attitudes were weakly positively correlated; however, neither construct was significantly correlated with willingness to provide accommodations. Overall, results suggest university professors have mildly more knowledge than the public about concussion, hold positive attitudes toward concussed individuals, and would be willing to provide accommodation with proof of injury.
