The Delivery of Developmental Mathematics: Course Redesign and Implementation at a Community College

This research was undertaken to determine if the redesigned modular delivery method for developmental mathematics produced a higher sequence completion rate within a year as compared to the traditional lecture style delivery. Re-enrollment rates from fall to spring for the modularized delivery system were compared to the traditional delivery method, and student success rates on final exams in the modular system were compared those in the traditional lecture style delivery. This computer based, modularized system had an inherent increase in rigor since mastery level leaning was required within each module. Student achievement data from the traditional lecture style delivery method were collected from previous years. A pilot study of the redesigned, modular based delivery was conducted in the Spring of 2011. For the pilot study, there were 396 students enrolled in the traditional course and 414 students enrolled in the redesigned modular course. During the 2011-2012 academic year, the college fully implemented the redesigned modular delivery system for all of the developmental mathematics classes. Findings were that student completion rates within 1 year dropped with the modularized system of delivery; however, fall to spring re-enrollment was slightly higher in the modularized delivery system. In the modularized system, it was also found that the students who successfully made it to taking the final exam showed a higher first time pass rate as compared to all students who took the final exam within the traditionally delivered courses.
