Curriculum, Credentials, and the Middle Class: A Case Study of a Nineteenth-Century High School.
Labaree, David F.
Sociology of Education, v59 n1 p42-57 Jan 1986
Described is the development of the modern hegemonic curriculum--i.e., one in which knowledge is stratified, academic, and appropriated through individual competition--in a nineteenth century high school. This developmental process hinged on the relationship between the school's curriculum and its middle-class constituency, a relationship structured according to market principles. (Author/RM)
