Beliefs and Behaviors of Elementary Principals of Successful Title I Schools

This qualitative phenomenological research study used narrative inquiry to investigate the behaviors and beliefs of eight Texas principals in high achieving Title I elementary schools. Participant interviews were analyzed using Creswell (2007) six-step method for analyzing phenomenological studies. Findings suggested that successful Title I principals are inclusive of all stakeholders. These principals have a strong desire for all children to be academically and socially successful and that Title I principals are most successful when they embrace their challenges and use them as guides for creating excellence. The findings also suggested the importance of building strong relationships with students, teachers, and parents. Principals in this study acknowledged that challenges exist for the purpose of finding strategies to better meet the needs of economically disadvantaged students. However, the findings also provided leadership practices from principals in successful Title I elementary schools that are enabling students to achieve academically. This study elaborated on ways they have effectively employed transformational leadership strategies to improve student academic achievement.
