The Effect of Economic Inflation on Local Public Library Support in Kentucky, 1967-1976.
Smith, Robert C.
This study was developed on the hypothesis that economic inflation reduced the purchasing power of local support for public libraries from 1967 through fiscal 1976. The total local support for public libraries in each county in each year of the study was adjusted from the reported nominal amount to the relative Consumer Price Index value of 1967 to show the impact of economic inflation. The nominal and adjusted figures are presented in tabular form, arranged by library development districts. Analysis of the data indicates that, while budgets have seemingly increased, economic inflation has reduced the purchasing power of public library supportive funds. In several instances, increases were not sufficient to offset inflation. Not only must inflation be considered in the planning of public library services and the budgeting of their support, but more attention should be given to the development of contingency plans in the event anticipated increases in support do not offset inflationary trends. Finally, regional library directors and local public librarians should be provided with the necessary data on inflation to be incorporated into fiscal planning. (Author/JAB)
