Involving Alumni in Career Assistance Programs.
Zagoren, Adelaide M., Comp.
The ways that alumni can contribute to career assistance programs and programs at 13 private schools, colleges, and universities are described in this handbook. In an introductory chapter, Adelaide M. Zagoren shows that career assistance programs help students find practical uses for their education, assist the institution evaluate the results of the education, and may aid alumni in their own career development. A career counseling program may establish important communication between the business world and the institution, and alumni career-related programs help the public image of the institution. According to Alva C. Cooper, alumni involvement is probably most helpful in the liberal arts college. Alumni must understand services performed by the career counseling and placement program, including orientation, individual and group counseling, outreach, career planning, and placement counseling and referral. Alumni are needed as speakers, as subjects of student interviews, and as sources for job development and experiential education programs. Attention is directed to program coordination, keeping good records, programs for liberal arts students and special constituencies, including graduate students, professional school students, nontraditional adult students, minority students, secondary school students, and alumni. Case studies and sample materials are presented for the following schools: Iowa State University, Smith College, Swarthmore College, Colgate University, Douglass College, Bryn Mawr College, Barnard College, Baldwin School, Dana Hall School, and Cranbrook and Kingswood Schools. Questionnaires, publicity materials, conference programs, and related materials are included. (SW)
