The Effect of Differentiated Video Presentation Formats on Community College Students' Preferences for Selected Excerpts of Western Classical Music

This study was an examination of participants' preference for classical music excerpts presented in differentiated types of music video formats. Participants (N = 83) were volunteer students enrolled in intact music appreciation classes at a suburban community college located in a Midwestern city. Participants listened to and viewed music video presentations and completed a written response form to indicate their degree of preference for the excerpts using a 5-point Likert-type scale. Two musical excerpts (one fast tempo and one slow tempo) were selected from a professional recording of a Mozart piano concerto and electronically paired with three different video formats to create stimulus DVDs for use in the study. Two experimental groups of participants were created: the Fast Tempo group (n = 39) and the Slow Tempo group (n = 44). This resulted in two music excerpt variables (slow and fast) and three video format variables (narrative, abstract, and documentary). Subject responses for each of the two DVD groups were tabulated and analyzed using a one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). No significant effect of video format was discovered for the Fast Tempo group, but significant differences (p less than 0.05) were found for the Slow Tempo group. Post hoc comparisons indicated a participant preference for the abstract and documentary conditions over the narrative condition. Future research should expand the musical and video styles to learn more about possible effects of visual stimuli in music presentation and how it might enhance listeners' preference for Western classical music.
