Atypical Cities
DiJulio, Betsy
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v110 n5 p36-37 Jan 2011
In this creative challenge, Surrealism and one-point perspective combine to produce images that not only go "beyond the real" but also beyond the ubiquitous "imaginary city" assignment often used to teach one-point perspective. Perhaps the difference is that in the "atypical cities challenge," an understanding of one-point perspective is a means to an end, rather than an end in itself. The work of Giorgio de Chirico, an early twentieth-century Italian Surrealist whose provocative paintings are less-well-known than those of Surrealists such as Salvador Dali, provided inspiration for this challenge.
