Positive Parenting and Challenging Children
Knoll, Melissa
Exceptional Parent, v37 n12 p34-35 Dec 2007
Positive parenting focuses on developing proactive ways to teach and reinforce desirable behaviors, as opposed to focusing on reacting to and attempting to decrease negative behaviors. Dr. Sheldon Braaten, Executive Director of Behavioral Institute for Children and Adolescents, offers some keys for setting up and using a positive reinforcement reward system: (1) Catch kids being good; (2) Reward the right behavior; (3) Use variety and creativity; (4) Avoid costly rewards; (5) Be consistent in your implementation; (6) It's not bribery; and (7) Have faith in your system.
