Exploring Cultural Differences in Children's Exposure to Television in Home-Based Child Care Settings
Shivers, Eva Marie; Barr, Rachel
Zero to Three, v27 n5 p39-45 May 2007
This article compares patterns of television use between African American and Latino child care providers in low-income households that are caring for children under the age of 5 years. Everyday experiences such as television viewing may impede or support healthy child development. Because both poverty and minority status put children at risk for lower levels of achievement in school it is incumbent upon researchers to understand the cultural context of children's daily experiences in their earliest years of life in order to develop meaningful interventions that promote optimal development. This study reveals cultural differences between Latino and African American child care providers and highlights important implications for training, policy, and practice.
