Pre-School Education: Report from Five Research Projects.
Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, Paris (France). Centre for Educational Research and Innovation.
This booklet, presenting a discussion of five experimental preschool programs, resulted from an international forum sponsored by the Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) for the leaders of these programs. The forum developed from a concern for the long range effectiveness of preschool education or intervention. The five programs chosen for the study had evidenced a concern for three aspects of preschool education: a balanced program, parent involvement, and a smooth transition from preschool to primary education. The programs included the Queensland Pre-School Correspondence Project (Australia), the German Youth Institute Pre-School Project (Germany), Differentiated Teaching for Children Aged 4 to 8 Years (The Netherlands), Cooperation Between Preschools and Primary Schools Project (Sweden), and Project Developmental Continuity (United States). The booklet includes a general description of each program and a discussion and comparison of specific facets of each program. Included are discussions of local versus centralized control, program content, positive discrimination through the identification of target groups, parent and community involvement, personnel education, and problems in the transition from preschool to primary education. Evaluation and program information dissemination strategies are also described. A brief discussion of possible future directions of CERI is included. Appendices list publications related to each project and provide bibliographical information on each project leader. (BD)
