Seizure Recognition and Observation: A Guide for Allied Health Professionals.
Epilepsy Foundation of America, Landover, MD.
Intended for allied health professionals, this guide provides information on seizure recognition and classification to help them assist the patient, the family, and the treating physician in obtaining control of epileptic seizures. A section on seizure recognition describes epilepsy and seizures, covering seizure classification and the causes of epilepsy. A section on seizure observation presents information pertaining to the rationale for such observation and observation components (what happened before, during, and after the seizure). The third section presents exercises (case studies) in observation and recording of seizures. Tables list the characteristics of partial and generalized seizures, and case studies with questions are presented. Use of the anecdotal record is explained. First aid for seizures is discussed in the fourth section, covering treatment during a convulsive seizure, head injury during a seizure, and non-convulsive seizures. (CB)
