This manual is one in a new series of self-contained materials for students enrolled in training with the allied health field. It includes competencies that are associated with the performance of skills by students beginning the study of respiratory therapy assistance. Intended to be used for individualized instruction under the supervision of an instructor, the student manual includes competencies, vocabulary, learning objectives, and information sections. This respiratory assistant training manual contains 18 units covering the following topics: introduction to respiratory therapy; equipment maintenance; medical terminology; anatomy and physiology of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems; administration of medical gases; humidity and aerosol therapy; pulmonary exercises and clearance techniques; pharmacology; pulmonary diseases and complications in adults; respiratory problems in the neonate and the child; patient assessment and diagnostic testing; artificial airways; airway care and suctioning; mechanical ventilation of an adult, an infant, and a small child; weaning patients from ventilatory support; and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
