The Vector Space as a Unifying Concept in School Mathematics.

The purpose of this study was to show how the concept of vector space can serve as a unifying thread for mathematics programs--elementary school to pre-calculus college level mathematics. Indicated are a number of opportunities to demonstrate how emphasis upon the vector space structure can enhance the organization of the mathematics curriculum. The mathematical emphasis in this study is on the development of the concept of an additive group with scalar multiplication from a field. Included is a detailed plan for teaching a class of college freshmen about the vector space of real functions. (RP)
