Bringing Back the Body: A Retrospective on the Development of Objectification Theory
Fredrickson, Barbara L.; Hendler, Lee Meyerhoff; Nilsen, Stephanie; O'Barr, Jean Fox; Roberts, Tomi-Ann
Psychology of Women Quarterly, v35 n4 p689-696 Dec 2011
In this article, Barbara L. Fredrickson reflects back on two early papers--"Objectification Theory: Toward Understanding Women's Lived Experiences and Mental Health Risks" and "A Mediational Model Linking Self-Objectification, Body Shame, and Disordered Eating"--and puts them into larger context. Both papers share an unusual origin story. To tell that story, Fredrickson's prior coauthors--Tomi-Ann Roberts and Stephanie Nilsen, respectively--as well as two pivotal change agents--Jean Fox O'Barr and Lee Meyerhoff Hendler--add their voices to the mix. What emerged is an inspiring depiction of how a receptive and visionary academic leader tilled the soil, inspired a team, and cultivated fruits within a field very distant from her own and how an engaged and generous alumna posed a question that ultimately reshaped the landscape of a scientific discipline.
