Arthur, Richard T. W. – Science & Education, 2012
In this paper it is argued that virtual processes are dispensable fictions. The argument proceeds by a comparison with the phenomenon of quantum tunnelling. Building on an analysis of Levy-Leblond and Balibar, it is argued that, although the phenomenon known as quantum tunnelling certainly occurs and is at the basis of many paradigmatic quantum…

Detweiler, Steven – American Journal of Physics, 1981
Lists resources on black holes, including: (1) articles of historical interest; (2) books and journal articles on elementary expositions; (3) elementary and advanced textbooks; and (4) research articles on analytic structure of black holes, black hole dynamics, and astrophysical processes. (SK)

Parker, Barry R.; McLeod, Robert J. – American Journal of Physics, 1980
An analogy, which has been drawn between black hole physics and thermodynamics, is mathematically broadened in this article. Equations similar to the standard partial differential relations of thermodynamics are found for black holes. The results can be used to supplement an undergraduate thermodynamics course. (Author/SK)

Muller, Derek A.; Lee, Kester J.; Sharma, Manjula D. – Australasian Journal of Educational Technology, 2008
The coherence principle states that all non-essential information in multimedia messages should be eliminated to minimise demands on cognitive resources. This assertion has been empirically verified in controlled laboratory studies with learners who have little prior knowledge and limited interest in the domain of instruction. It has not been…

Hall, Donald E. – Physics Teacher, 1985
Reviews the basic properties and evidence for their existence. (The sequel will consider the consequences if a human being had opportunity to interact directly with a black hole.) (JN)

Oda, Minoru – Quantum, 1992
Describes the genesis, the early experiments, and the limitations of X-ray astronomy. Discusses original methods for searching and locating the first interstellar X-ray source, modern attempts to identify a massive black hole as part of a binary system X-ray source, and the effort to generate X-ray images of solar flares. (JJK)

Graves, Susan K.; And Others – American Journal of Physics, 1982
Describes an exercise, suitable for use on programmable calculators or microcomputers, to calculate some of the rapidly processing orbits of a mass M near a static black hole star of mass M. (SK)

Shipman, Harry L. – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2001
Explains how hands-on science activities can be done in a class designed as a lecture setting. Uses the collapsing can activity to demonstrate the birth of a black hole. Evaluates student responses to the hands-on approach. (YDS)

Page, Don N.; McKee, M. Randall – Mercury, 1983
The future of the universe is discussed in terms of several models. These include the closed, open, and critical models of the universe. Black holes and speculation on what may happen to life in the cosmological models are also discussed. (JN)

Thomsen, Dietrick E. – Science News, 1975
Summarizes some thoughts of Stephen W. Hawking who proposes that certain kinds of communications across the event horizon are possible, that they lead to the evaporation or explosion of the black hole, and, therefore, that classical or quantum mechanical causality has no meaning. (GS)

Huebner, Jay S.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1996
Describes basic misconceptions about the origin of elements and forms of matter found in chemistry texts that need modification in light of modern observational data and interpretations given in astronomy. Notes that there are forms of matter other than elements and compounds. Confounding examples from astronomy include white dwarfs, neutron…

Bollag, Burton – Chronicle of Higher Education, 2006
Kenneth E. Brashier, Mark S. Lewine, Alexei V. Filippenko, and Donna C. Boyd were the four professors who won the Professors of the Year for 2006. They were chosen from nearly 300 candidates nominated by their institutions for their "outstanding commitment to teaching undergraduate students and their influence on teaching." The annual…

Novemsky, Lisa; Gautreau, Ronald – 1997
Physics learning involves a change in the habitual perception of the everyday world. In order to describe the real world scientifically, an individual must develop perception and cognition capable of reconstructing the world from raw sensory data and incorporating acquired knowledge of the scientific community. The introductory physics student…

Hawkins, Brian L.; Oblinger, Diana G. – EDUCAUSE Review, 2005
Claims that investing in information technology will save money for a college or university have rarely proven true. In fact, realizing the promised dollar savings is so rare in higher education that the credibility of many IT professionals has been jeopardized by making the claim. Not producing promised savings only exacerbates the sense, among…
