Discrimination based on gradations of skin color can occur within and between racial or ethnic groups, including blacks, Latinos, and Asians. Lighter skin and Caucasian features tend to be viewed more positively than darker-skin qualities. Where a person of color falls along the "color line" may affect his or her social status, employment opportunities, dating and spousal relationships, and psychological health. This article illustrates how colorism is related to racism and how color stratification may play a role in sport settings. Several scenarios are given along with questions to consider when examining the role of colorism in school and sport settings. Suggestions are also made for reducing the negative effects of racism and colorism.
