Biblio-Tech: Survival Skills for the Information Age. A Handbook of Research Skills--Both in and out of the Library, for Use in College--and Long Afterward. Revised Edition.
Community Coll. of Vermont, Waterbury.
Presented in 13 short sections, this bibliographic instruction manual is intended to help both students and non-students to: (1) locate specific information sources and make use of existing information systems--e.g., libraries--to carry out research; and (2) become oriented in the research process by following organized search strategies. Section I addresses the self-reliant learner, and advocates digging for information, being open to what is found, and managing it wisely as a means to control one's life and assist in achieving life goals. Section II defines information and discusses its sources and applications. Section III describes plagiarism and copyright laws, suggesting what needs to be cited. The outline of the research process in Section IV explains how to define research questions, gather information, and find leads, and features a flow chart illustrating the process. Helpful hints for finding information are provided in Sections V and VI, and Section VII offers six search strategy case studies. Sections VIII through XIII explore features of libraries and library resources (e.g., interlibrary loan, microcomputers, cataloging, the reference department, and government documents). Five appendixes include a review of the mechanics of footnotes; a bibliography of research guides; a glossary of terms; explanations of library classification systems; and a condensed version of Bloom's Taxonomy of Cognitive Objectives. Keyword and subject indexes are also provided. (SD)
