Behavior-based interviewing (BBI) has been used in the business world for decades as a way to select new hires whose past behaviors indicate future success. Behavior-based interviews are based on the premise that past behavior is the best predictor of future performance and that interview questions should evaluate the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the candidate to do the job. The use of BBI is growing in teacher selection because administrators know that interviews must ascertain the candidate's ability to do the important job of teaching. After researching and writing about BBI for several years and training administrators to use this interview model, the author has found that the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) standards serve as a starting point for discussion about what to include in interview questions. In this article, the author describes 10 INTASC standards for writing interview questions: (1) knowledge of subject matter; (2) knowledge of human development and learning; (3) individualized instruction; (4) multiple instructional strategies; (5) classroom motivation and management; (6) communication skills; (7) instructional planning skills; (8) assessment of student learning; (9) professional commitment and responsibility; and (10) partnerships. She also discusses how to customize interview questions and offers some sample questions to be added in the interview.
