Specialized Summer Camps: Provide Benefits for Children and Families Alike
Neff, John M.
Exceptional Parent, v39 n3 p34-36 Mar 2009
The arrival of summer signals a season of endless days of swimming, fishing, summer camps, and other outdoor activities. For children with chronic or terminal illnesses, it can be difficult to participate in many of these activities as well as challenging for parents to find summer camps that not only engage their children, but also offer the medical care and attention they need. There has been a rise in specialized summer camps in the U.S. to help meet the growing population of children with chronic conditions. These camps offer children an opportunity to participate in a true camp experience while providing specialized medical care and attention that goes beyond what is typically offered at traditional summer camps. This article describes the benefits which specialized summer camps like the Stanley Stamm Summer Camp provide to children with chronic conditions and their families. It also offers some tips and resources which can help in selecting a specialized summer camp.
