Communication Factors of Group Leadership.
Weinberg, Sanford; And Others
In order to determine the communication factors of group leadership, 500 undergraduates enrolled in an introductory communication theory course at a large New England university were randomly assigned to laboratory sections of 25 students each. Over an eight week period the students in each group redistributed into different groups varying in size and composition. Twenty-five students were chosen who consistently emerged as group leaders. These 25 students were randomly assigned to one of five groups of five individuals each. After discussion periods, subjects were asked to complete the three sets of forms which comprise the newly developed Leadership Quotient Index (LQI). Three significant factors of group leadership emerged; persuasion, openness, and information. The LQI was found to be both valid and reliable. Though further refinements of LQI are contemplated, the index as it now stands can serve as a highly useful operational definition of group leadership. (Sample questionnaires are included.) (JF)
