Stressing that the importance of listening carefully cannot be underestimated, this handbook describes the process of listening (including the five components--previous knowledge, listening material, physiological activity, attention, and intellectual activity), some barriers to efficient listening, and bad and good listening habits. It also discusses research in listening (value of listening instruction, listening and reading, instructional effects, learner characteristics); the role of the teacher, student, and administrator in listening instruction; objectives for listening; the skills of comprehension; and sample activities for listening instruction. Appendixes to sections 2 and 3 include an outline of the listening process, a checklist of listening behaviors for teachers, a sample listening assessment item, and a six-page list of references.
