New Directions for Institutional Research, n142 p41-55 Sum 2009
In this article, the authors introduce a method of understanding the experiences and needs of Asian American students on college campuses through the research process. Specifically, the authors offer a students-as-researchers approach to connect the transformative educational aims of Asian American studies to the scholarship, service, and lived experiences of Asian American students. Asian American studies and transformative education emphasize social justice by empowering individuals and communities, as well as encouraging critical exploration of epistemology. An example of this type of education is when students become researchers examining the experiences of Asian American college students, and their research contributes to their own education and empowerment, as well as that of the Asian American community, through increasing levels of knowledge about Asian Americans' lived experiences. This students-as-researchers model also functions as community-based learning by encouraging students to address the needs of their communities through research.
