Asbestos in Colorado Schools.
Baldwin, Cynthia A.
This study determined, by means of a random sample, how many of Colorado's public schools have asbestos materials and estimated the potential risk of exposure presented by these materials. Forty-one schools were surveyed. Bulk samples of possible asbestos materials were collected and analyzed using the K-squared Asbestos Screening Test to eliminate samples which did not contain asbestos. Positive samples were analyzed by an accredited laboratory using polarized light microscopy. The risk of potential exposure presented by these materials was assessed for each sampling site. One hundred thirteen samples were collected. Only 10.6 percent of the samples were negative for the K-squared Test. Of the 101 positive samples, 56 actually contained one or more forms of asbestos. Twelve samples were from sprayed material, the remaining 44 were from other materials. Of the 41 schools sampled, 76 percent had asbestos materials in one or more locations. The values for the exposure potential ranged from very low to very high, with the majority presenting high exposure potentials. It is estimated from these results that from 63 percent to 89 percent of the public schools in Colorado may have asbestos materials which present potentially serious hazards to individuals using these facilities.
