Teaching Nature in Cities and Towns. Urban Outdoor Biology and Ecology.
Vogl, Sonia Wolff; Vogl, Robert L.
Developed to assist teachers in the teaching of outdoor biology and ecology, this guide contains lessons that can be conducted in an urban environment for elementary level students. Each lesson begins with thought-provoking introductory questions which lead into the actual activity, and concludes with discussion questions and suggestions for additional activities. Major sections address the topics of: (1) surveying the site (including introductory activities on the environment, soil, and water); (2) plants in the city (containing lessons on trees, weeds and grass, small plants and experiments with plants); (3) animals in the city (focusing on birds, insects, mammals, and animal adaptations); and (4) studying and building communities (consisting of activities with aquaria, terraria, mini-habitats, and local ecosystems).
