Berenson, Sarah B.; And Others – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1990
Assessed was the level of thinking of 140 students who had been placed in developmental algebra as entering college freshmen. Scores on the Group Assessment of Logical Thinking, Scholastic Aptitude Tests, college placement tests; high school grade point average, and developmental algebra final grade were analyzed. Group characteristics are…

Peer reviewedKeif, Malcolm G.; Stewart, Bob R. – Journal of Vocational Education Research, 1996
Missouri high school students (n=254) in applied mathematics (AM) 1, AM2, and a control group in algebra 1 completed the Pre-ACT (American College Test) and ACT Work Keys. Students in AM2 attained skills comparable to those in algebra 1. AM students had similar math attitudes to those of algebra students despite less previous success in math. (SK)

Over the past 3 years, the Mathematics Department of Grossmont College, in California, has examined the issues of course standards, instructor grading variability, and course placement. In 1990, a study was conducted to determine if the Elementary Algebra instructors with lower pass rates had higher standards, and if their students had a higher…

Cunningham, Pearley – 1995
A study was conducted at the Community College of Allegheny County, in Pennsylvania, to compared the level of preparedness in an intermediate algebra course for students who placed directly into the course and those who had tested into and completed a basic algebra course. Placement test scores, algebra course grades, and repeat status were…

Hopkins, Laurie; Kinard, Amelia – 1998
This study explores a program designed to revolutionize developmental mathematics at the college level using the new handheld computer algebra systems and new information about the ways in which students learn mathematics. Students in one class of developmental algebra worked with the new approach to learn algebra by building on their intuitive…

Peer reviewedThomas, P. G.; Rickhuss, M. G. – Education and Computing, 1992
This study examined the effectiveness of a computer algebra system in teaching secondary school mathematics. Pre- and posttest results and time on task were compared for students receiving conventional instruction and those receiving computer-assisted instruction using an enhanced version of muMath, a standard computer algebra package. (four…

Peer reviewedOdell, Patricia; Schumacher, Phyllis – Primus, 1995
Correlations of a test of algebra skills, SAT mathematics scores, and final mathematics grades indicated that most college freshmen would be better placed in mathematics courses by using the test of algebra skills and SAT scores than by using SAT scores alone. (18 references) (Author/MKR)

Peer reviewedClement, Russell W.; Green, Laura R. – ERS Spectrum, 1999
Examines the status of Broward County (Florida) Public Schools high school students, who must satisfy the district's algebra requirement in order to graduate. Data indicate that the majority of district students are meeting the new, higher standards; 80% of seniors in school year 1998-99 had previously completed the algebra requirement. (MLH)

Peer reviewedSutherland, Rosamund – For the Learning of Mathematics, 1991
Discusses concerns for mathematics education research on algebra and requestions methods that focus on the Piagetian concept of cognitive obstacles. Suggests the use of computer-based environments to develop the concept of variable and offers research findings indicating that experiences working with variables in LOGO influences student…

Peer reviewedJudson, Phoebe T. – Journal of Mathematical Behavior, 1990
Described are various ways that a computer algebra system (MAPLE) was used to facilitate the resequencing of skills and applications within an elementary college-level business calculus course. Experimental results confirmed earlier findings that skills acquisition is not a prerequisite to conceptual understanding or problem-solving ability. (JJK)

Adams, Thomasenia L. – Florida Education Research Council Research Bulletin, 1994
Algebra students typically pay little attention to choosing appropriate domains, ranges and scales of axes for graphing functions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of introducing an assignment and employing the graphing calculator to examine and alleviate students' difficulties regarding the selection of appropriate domains,…

Peer reviewedGamoran, Adam; Hannigan, Eileen C. – Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, 2000
Used national survey data to examine the impact of high school algebra on students who differed in mathematics skills before entering high school. Regression analysis with over 12,500 students indicates that all students benefit from taking algebra, although benefits are smaller for those with very low prior achievement. (SLD)

Peer reviewedCarlson, Marilyn P. – AMATYC Review, 1997
Reports the results of an investigation designed to help algebra teachers and curriculum developers by providing insights into how high-performing college algebra students (N=30) develop an understanding of major aspects of the concept of function. Results revealed that these high-performing students actually possessed weak understanding. Contains…

Peer reviewedTilidetzke, Robert – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1992
This study investigated differences in achievement for control groups learning college algebra using traditional classroom instruction methods compared to experimental groups using computer algebra tutorials for three precalculus topics. Two instructors each taught one control group and one experimental group. No significant differences were…

Schifter, Deborah – 1997
This paper posits that, as educators' attention turns to elementary mathematics as preparation for algebra, it is important to begin by examining the kind of elementary mathematics content teaching that is aligned with reform. The paper calls for a close examination of students' development of operation sense. The role of children's engagement…
