Scarcella, Joe; Wallace, Art
Tech Directions, v71 n3 p21-23 Oct 2011
Gliders and sailplanes provide a great launching platform for teaching about technology and scientific principles. Soaring is technological innovation in action, using earth's natural resources for energy and endurance during flight. This article focuses on the basics of soaring, which educators can use to increase excitement and interest in the technology education classroom. By teaching students about soaring, educators can show them what is possible under powerless flight and help them explore the fundamentals and principles of aerodynamics. By studying soaring, technology teachers and students can infuse principles of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics into the every day curriculum.
