Communication.
Strauss, Andre
The following essays on communication are presented: communication as a condition of survival, communication for special purposes, the means of transmission of communication, communication within social and economic structures, the teaching of communication through the press, the teaching of modern languages, communication as a point of departure, research at the Centre for Applied Study in Communication, individual culture in 1976, and the United States in 1976. One of the points is that learning languages for special purposes in the present-day technological world makes it necessary to learn the conventions corresponding to the particular field. Languages for special purposes are only taught to people who already know their native language and are fluent in the foreign language concerned. In communicating a message, it is not possible to grasp the measure of a given message without a clear understanding of the procedures used to transmit it. Communication between two or more people, telephone, radio, television, and the cinema are discussed. Horizontal and vertical communication, and space and time as the two main elements involved in the receipt and examination of a message, are discussed. It is suggested that communication requires the right psychological approach, adequate knowledge, and control of the expressions of the technical language. (SW)
