Empowerment of African American Women Leaders in Higher Education: A Multiple Case Study
McDaniel, Sharon L.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the perspectives on empowerment held by African American women who work in executive positions within higher educational settings. This study also seeks to provide other women with a deeper level of awareness regarding the journey towards executive leadership. Current literature explores the empowerment of individuals excelling in executive leadership roles within higher education based on the experiences of the majority male population. This study addressed perceptions of African American women's struggle towards executive leadership, experiences among African American women working in higher education, and strategies for removing barriers to leadership goals. To receive an in-depth understanding of the experiences of African American women, the primary investigator conducted a study with a sample of African American women who currently work in or have worked in executive leadership roles within higher educational settings. Qualitative methodology was used to identify themes and trends among African American women who have achieved high status in both traditional and non-traditional collegiate settings. Through case studies, the researcher explored a variety of dynamics that empowered these women to be successful in their career endeavors. The results indicated that African American women are empowered by a strong sense of self-efficacy, systemic supports for leadership skill development, and family support. The researcher recommends that this new information can be used to further the development of targeted leadership development programs for African American women working in higher education settings.
