This issue of Clubbers' Guide contains an article written by Liz Carter, Senior Science Technician at the Warwick School, Redhill, Surrey (UK), describing some of the wide variety of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) based activities that her school puts on during an eight-day summer school in the holidays for prospective students. But what treasures could the students possibly hunt for at school? The students discovered the treasures behind such subjects as rocket science, with an introduction to Newton's laws of motion; a day themed "A message from the aliens," presenting the solar system and its place in the universe, with a history of space exploration. Another treasure was discovering different ways in which watches work; what time is, the development of number systems and a discussion of why we have days and years. Ecology was explored that taught the children about the natural environment, our dependence on it and the importance of biodiversity. Two additional treasures were the forensic science day that provided "crime science investigation" events for young people and the session on DNA, "the molecule of life", that accounts for us as individuals, our past and our future. The students were encouraged to preserve their DNA through adopting healthy lifestyles. The treasure hunt of activities summer school ended with a presentation to parents. Liz Carter recommends other schools adopt this kind of program and see the benefits to the school science program, student and staff development, a growing network of useful contacts, ideas for activities, stronger working relationships, and good publicity.
