When Less May Be More: Rethinking Teachers' Written Corrective Feedback Practices--Interview with Icy Lee
Yeo, Marie
RELC Journal: A Journal of Language Teaching and Research, v49 n2 p257-261 Aug 2018
Icy Lee is Professor in the Faculty of Education at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where she is currently serving as Chairperson of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Her main research interests are in the areas of second language writing and second language teacher education. Icy is best known for her research on feedback in L2 writing. In this interview, she addresses the following topic areas: how she became interested in second language writing and written corrective feedback, especially within an exam-oriented Asian context; major developments in how teachers should provide written corrective feedback; key changes she thinks need to be made in the way teachers usually correct errors in writing; signs she has seen over the years in innovation and change in the way teachers respond to writing; how the expectations of principals and parents can be aligned with what the research says is 'best practice'; what teachers can do to manage student expectations and, more importantly, to promote uptake; advice for academics starting out in the field regarding academic publishing; and her professional aspirations.
