Student and Teacher Success: The Impact of Computers in Primary Grades.
Drexler, Nancy Gadzuk; And Others
This paper discusses the impact of computers on student learning as reported by teachers participating in a study of a computer-based language arts instructional program for the early elementary grades--the Apple Learning Series: Early Language (ALS-EL). Although they found the program difficult to evaluate, some teachers stated that the ALS-EL program had a positive impact on student writing but less impact on student reading skills. Few teachers attributed higher-level reading fluency or comprehension benefits to ALS-EL use, although most of them felt the students were gaining important computer competencies. They also reported that non-literacy outcomes such as enhanced student self-esteem, attitudes toward school, cooperative behavior, and motivation, all appeared to be positively influenced by use of the ALS-EL program. It is concluded that, although this study indicates that ALS-EL can function as a catalyst for change, contributing to the successful transformation of the learning environment, promoting creative teaching techniques, and influencing student achievement, such outcomes must be viewed cautiously given the short-term nature of the study.
