Calling All Innovators
Wagner, Tony
Educational Leadership, v69 n7 p66-69 Apr 2012
In a study of highly innovative young people in their 20s, the author found that although many people in the millennial generation want to do meaningful work and make a difference in the world, conventional high schools and colleges are not preparing their graduates to be innovators and entrepreneurs. This is a serious problem, he asserts, because most policymakers, economists, and businesspeople agree that society's long-term economic health depends on innovation. The article describes five essential practices in creating a school culture of innovation: expecting collaboration, emphasizing multidisciplinary learning, embracing risk and failure as part of learning, treating students as creators, and providing intrinsic motivation.
