Travel and Tourism Students' Needs in Valencia (Spain): Meeting their Professional Requirements in the ESP Classroom
Garcia Laborda, Jesus
Online Submission
The main purpose of this paper is to describe the basic findings obtained as a result of the implementation of two projects of Computer and Information Technologies held in Valencia (Spain) between 2002 and 2003 with 92 second year university students enrolled in English as a foreign language to find out their ICT and foreign language needs both in academic and professional contexts. The UPV at Gandia is currently operating two experimental educational programs of new technologies applied in teaching students of tourism. Basic Computer Introduction in Tourism is intended for students in the first year, and Linguistic and computer implementation in FL learning ("Adecuacion linguistica y en nuevas tecnologias del aprendizaje de ingles para la diplomatura de Turismo") is a 2-year program. Through teacher's observation and a final survey learners expressed their main educational needs after participating in one or both programs. These needs were also revised as compared to those of their college fellows enrolled in French. In short, the findings in this paper revealed their correlation with some of the issues brought up in relation to the Tourism students' needs in previous literature (Garcia Laborda, 2002a). These results show that the use computers are a valuable tool in itself and also promote foreign language learning through the increase of input and language use. Further research suggests to extend this study to more colleges and countries, and consider the importance of computer based language learning and progressive implementation of ICT in professional fields.
