This booklet on mentoring of minority students and faculty by majority students and faculty presents information on mentoring, its background and problems associated with it. The document follows a recent joint statement on the issue by the National Education Association and the American Association of University Professors. An overview of the status of minorities in higher education covers demography, the faculty pipeline, and limitations and obstacles for minorities on campus. A section on retention programs that work describes the key features of such programs including leadership at the highest institutional levels, sound planning, an institution-wide approach, expanding the pool and pipelines, and financial support. A section specifically on mentoring in higher education defines mentoring and discusses how it has traditionally worked in American doctoral programs. It also explores obstacles to establishing mentoring programs for minorities and women faculty and offers guidelines for establishing and supporting mentoring programs. A final section explores the role of faculty and staff unions. Appendixes contain the joint National Education Association/American Association of University Professors statement on mentoring and a list of mentoring programs in higher education.
