The Nervous System Game

For many children, especially those with reading difficulties, a motor-kinesthetic learning activity may be an effective tool to teach complex concepts. With this in mind, the authors developed and tested a game designed to teach fourth- to sixth-grade children some basic principles of nervous system function by allowing the children themselves to model the nervous system signals. In this article, this nervous system game was presented in four scenarios: (1) motor control; (2) sensory function; (3) simple reflexes; and (4) spinal cord injury. The authors found the game a good way to introduce such complex principles as motor versus sensory signaling, reflexes, and the effects of spinal cord injury. Although students do not learn about the nervous system in depth until later years, this game gives a good introduction to how nervous system messages are relayed.
