Women have traditionally entered courses of study congruent with social sex-role stereotypes. Two critical questions were examined with regard to their choice of college major--whether traditional or non-traditional. Women and men enrolled in 22 instructional program areas in the University of Wisconsin system for the years 1973-74 and 1977-78 were compared. Women continue to dominate the areas of home economics, library science, foreign languages, health professions, education, fine and applied arts, and public affairs and services. Women are also moving into non-traditional areas, although neither their percent of total enrollment or their actual numbers approach those of men. The greatest movement of women into non-traditional majors is in the area of business and management, followed by agriculture and natural resources, biological sciences, and engineering. (Author)
