Supporting Solo at the District Level
Woodard, Mary
Knowledge Quest, v40 n2 p44-46 Nov-Dec 2011
School librarians in the Mesquite Independent School District (ISD) have been operating solo on their campuses since the 1970s. Campus clerical assistance in the school libraries was a luxury that they couldn't afford. Since the district's vision was of a teaching librarian, a Library Processing Department was established in 1972. As years passed, school library programs evolved and their Library Processing Department turned into Library Services. Currently, this department's staff consists of a director, a library technology facilitator, an acquisitions manager, and two materials processors. In this era of budget and staff cuts, it is imperative that school librarians spend their time working with students. School librarians with no clerical assistance must do whatever they can to limit the time spent on non-instructional tasks. The goal of Mesquite ISD Library Services is to provide whatever service it can to give campus librarians as much time as possible to focus on instruction and student learning.
