Students' Sense of Responsibility in Event Planning: The Moral Aspect of Risk Management

Many scholars have asserted that college should contribute to the moral development of students, developing them into people who can think and act morally (Chickering, 1969; Evans, Forney, & Guido-DiBrito, 1998; Mathaisen, 2005). This responsibility applies not only to the classroom, but to the co-curricular experience as well. The incorporation of moral development into risk management practices on college campuses cannot only further reduce liability, but also educate students on value and moral based decision-making. Although grounded in legal principles, a trend in student-centered risk management education is for students to consider and use a moral and value-based decision-making process for event planning, understanding how their behaviors and choices impact others and themselves. The understanding of how, or if, students use moral behaviors and considerations as they plan events using risk management is unknown. There has been little to no research conducted in this area. This study sheds light on this issue through exploring the considerations of students as they plan events and activities. It seeks to understand whether or not those considerations are values-based and whether or not students take into account the impact of their decisions and behaviors on others. Another aspect of this study is to further define the education provided to students around risk management. Administrators approach this aspect of student activities in various ways from a hands-off approach to making all the decisions themselves. Risk management is not traditionally defined in moral terms but a perspective shaded by potential legal implications and consequences. Through the exploration of students' moral understandings of the event planning Process, this study reframes the teaching and learning around risk management and the approach & administrators with students.
